Whatever type of spindle and rail system you choose to use, the basic rules apply to them all.

  • The gap between the spindles should be no greater that 100mm, so as not to allow the passage of a 100mm diameter sphere through any part of the balustrade structure. Careful attention to this detail is needed when using turned newels and turned spindles as the gap will be widest at the narrowest part of the spindle
  • Any gap between the deck and the bottom base rail should again be not greater that 100mm.
  • The finished height of the handrail (not necessarily the newel posts) should be a minimum  of 900mm for domestic. It is slightly different for commercial applications, handrails to landings 1.10m high and 900mm to stairs.
  • Any edge of a deck over 600mm high from ground level should be protected by a hand rail system.
  • Any flight of steps over 600mm high should also be protected by a handrail.
  • The handrail on a flight of steps does not have to extend down to the last or bottom step, but can do if you desire.
  • Any form of rope balustrading should not be used as a protective handrail system to a deck over 600mm high.
